Marketing firm holds career seminar at UBC Print E-mail

By Robert Todd | Publication Date: Monday, 24 September 2007

A Vancouver-based marketing and management-services firm will be asking UBC’s Faculty of Law, “Does the firm choose you or do you choose the firm?” in an Oct. 10 seminar.

The seminar, to be presented by GEM Communications’ managing director Gary Mitchell, aims to give students some tangible skills to drive their careers forward and make them attractive candidates for law firm recruiters.
“We believe in supporting lawyers at all levels of their careers, and that includes students,” says Mitchell. “Part of that is helping students understand the possibilities in today’s marketplace and assisting them in getting off to a successful start by finding the right opportunity.”
Mitchell last year presented a seminar to third-year law students at UBC that discussed the business of law.
Kaila Mikkelsen, the UBC’s director of career services, says many students wished they’d received Mitchell’s advice earlier in their law-school experience.
“Gary’s session last year was incredibly well received,” she says. “We look forward to hosting him again this year.”
GEM Communications specializes in marketing and management services for law firms in areas such as business development, team development, leadership, management, and succession planning. The company offers students seminars as part of its philanthropy program.
