How doy ou know that you would be prepared by taking tax for the bars? Your pompous intro almost made me puke. You should have talked to someone who had just taken the bar. Or at least taken a look at the LSUC materials. There is barely any tax on the bar exams. You are much much better of taking real estate or estates... or any business course (the materials are very corporate law heavy) rather than tax. Hope you learned something.

Firstly I am a practicing tax lawyer and I love the subject. When I took the bar exam a couple of years back we only had about half a dozen very, very basic questions on tax law. Whereas in the study materials, the LSUC devoted about 80 to 100 pages to the topic. So, unless things have changed, your time would be better spent taking a class in real estate law for the bar exam.

I'm delighted to have received so much feedback in relation to this column! I just want to clarify, in no way did I intend to diminish the importance of tax law to the bar in general or my own legal education personally, All I was trying to say was, that I find the course challenging but am taking it despite its difficulty because it is so fundamentally important to any well rounded study of the law in Canada. Please keep the feedback coming and bear in mind that I write as a 2L who is very intimidated by this complex area of the law, but working hard to gain an understanding.

We don't need Brad Pitt to make tax law sexy! It's inherently sexy! In what other area of law do you have "bumps" and "grinds" and "rollovers"! We even have the General Anti-Avoidance Rule or GAAR so that our conversations sound like we are a merry band of pirates! On a slightly more serious note (and only slightly): Tax law is also the one area of the law that touches every individual in the country. Most people will never buy or sell a business, file for a patent, or even need labour and employment advice. But everyone pays taxes and files a tax return. And some of our leading charter and human rights cases started as tax disputes. For a fantastic example of this, read Martin Ginsberg's acceptance speech for the ABA's Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and learn how the denial of a tax benefit under the US tax code led to the creation of the ACLU's Women's Rights Project.
