Joseph Groia

Joseph Groia

Principal, Groia & Company PC

On June 1, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in Joseph Groia’s favour in his professional misconduct case against the Law Society of Ontario, which arose from his zealous defence of John Felderhof in a 10-year prosecution of charges arising out of the collapse of Bre-X Minerals Ltd. The case highlighted the balance between civility and zealous advocacy of a client. Groia specializes in securities litigation in civil, regulatory and criminal cases. He has spoken at various conferences and educational programs including the McGill University Meredith Lectures and the Oxford Conference on international securities fraud. He is the co-author of a textbook on securities litigation and was elected to serve as an LSO bencher in 2015. During the controversy surrounding the law society’s statement of principles, Groia submitted a motion to allow for an exemption for conscientious objectors.

WHAT VOTERS HAD TO SAY:
“Staunch defender, deserves to be recognized.”
“Mr. Groia’s work in respect of the [LSO’s] so-called statement of principles is gallant.”
“At times distasteful, but a passionate advocate willing to go the distance.”
