On May 6, 2025, Create Music Group has acquired Canadian electronic music label Monstercat in a strategic move to broaden its global presence and deepen its investment in artist development. Though the acquisition value was not disclosed, Create committed to invest an additional USD 50 million (approximately CAD 68.3 million) over the next two years to support artist development, advances, and platform enhancements across Monstercat’s roster. Founded in 2011 in Waterloo, Ontario, and now headquartered in Vancouver with operations in Toronto and Los Angeles, Monstercat will continue operating independently under president Daniel Turcotte, VP Orri Sachar, and finance director Rob Hill. Founders Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen will remain involved as advisors.
Monstercat has released over 8,000 tracks from artists such as Kaskade, Alan Walker, and DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal), and paid over USD 60 million (approximately CAD 82 million) to artists to date. Its catalogue spans three sub-labels—Uncaged, Instinct, and Silk—and includes a robust live events portfolio and sync licensing service, Monstercat Gold. The label placed over 150 tracks in video games in 2024 alone through partnerships with Fortnite, Rocket League, and others. Legal advisors for Monstercat were Artisan Law, Reed Smith LLP, and Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, while Create Music Group was advised by Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, Paul Hastings LLP, and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. The transaction reflects Create's commitment to scaling Monstercat’s artist-first ethos and expanding its infrastructure and creative pathways for artists worldwide.
