Nvidia acquires Toronto-based AI infrastructure startup CentML

In June 2025, Nvidia Corporation acquired CentML, a Toronto-based machine learning infrastructure startup whose software operated between users' AI models and underlying graphics processing unit hardware to optimize cost, throughput, and performance for training and serving large-scale models. Founded by researchers from the University of Toronto and led by Gennady Pekhimenko, CentML emerged from stealth in June 2023 and had raised a US$27 million seed round in October 2023 led by Google's Gradient Ventures, at a reported post-money valuation of just over US$60 million, with participation from Nvidia itself, Deloitte Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, and Radical Ventures. The June 2025 sale represented a significant exit for those early backers, including Deloitte Ventures, Deloitte Canada's 150 million dollar venture capital initiative. Nvidia beat out other interested bidders for the company, and according to reporting by The Logic, the transaction could exceed US$400 million in aggregate value after adjustments including earn-outs tied to undisclosed performance targets. As part of the deal, former CentML Chief Executive Officer Gennady Pekhimenko became Nvidia's senior director for AI software, the company's other three co-founders took manager positions at Nvidia, and at least 18 additional technical staff joined the chip giant. CentML's standalone customer-facing operations were wound down, with customers notified that operations would officially end on July 17, 2025. Nvidia and the parties did not officially confirm the transaction value.
