Toronto Metropolitan University names Wendy Lawrence as general counsel

Toronto Metropolitan University has announced the appointment of Wendy Lawrence as general counsel, secretary to the board of governors, and chief privacy officer, effective Sept. 18, 2023. TMU reported that Lawrence will lead the development of governance policies and provide governance advice to the president, board chair, committees of the board and senior administrators of the university. She will support the operation of the board of governors through the development of operational practices and procedures, and provide, retain and supervise legal advice on a full range of legal issues including contracts, commercial transactions, administrative decision-making, real estate and construction, labour and employment, human rights and litigation.

In her current role at St. Joseph Healthcare, Lawrence provides guidance on a wide range of legal, governance and risk matters. Her role also covers the development of governance processes and best practices, including hospital by-laws.

TMU reported that Lawrence brings broad legal experience on matters ranging from contracts, corporate commercial transactions, regulatory compliance, privacy law and administrative law to ensure compliance with laws and a robust assessment of risk.
