Federal government’s voluntary AI code of conduct receives support from eight new organizations

Eight new organizations have voluntarily committed to giving their support to the federal government’s AI code of conduct, which is the Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems.

According to Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne, the organizations have taken a voluntary commitment of supporting the development of a more robust and responsible AI ecosystem in the country.

“Artificial intelligence is one of the greatest technological transformations of our age, and our government is committed to providing Canadians and Canadian businesses with the tools they need to thrive in this digital era,” said Champagne.

“In undertaking the Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems, leading Canadian organizations continue to adopt responsible measures for advanced generative AI systems that will help build safety and trust well into the future as the technology grows,” he added.

The eight new signatories to the voluntary code of conduct were Alloprof, Kyndryl, Lenovo, Levio, MaRS Discovery District, Mastercard, Organisme d'autoréglementation du courtage immobilier du Québec (OACIQ), and Salesforce.

Joining 22 other signatories, the eight organizations will be pledging to uphold the code when it comes to their operations concerning the development and management of advanced generative AI systems.

The federal government continues to take action when it comes to AI as they are committing about $2.4 billion in Budget 2024 in order to secure the country’s advantage in the realm of AI.

The measures it is doing which is concerned with keeping the country’s leadership role in AI include the investment in compute capacity and infrastructure, acceleration of the responsible and safe adoption and deployment of AI, and providing support to workers through training their skills.

The Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems was first launched in 2023.
