This year’s Law Games Spirit Cup winners have donated their prize money to help children and fight AIDS in Africa.
The University of Ottawa’s common and civil law faculties worked together at this year’s Law Games in Montreal, held Jan. 2 to 4, to take home the Spirit Cup trophy and a cash prize of $1,000 sponsored by Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP.
Civil law faculty captain Gabriel Archambault tells Canadian Lawyer 4Students the team is donating the prize money to Lawyers’ International Food Enterprise (LIFE), a foundation that raises money and supports projects undertaken by the Stephen Lewis Foundation and World Vision Canada for children in Africa.
“We wanted to donate the money we received to LIFE because we thought it was important to give it to an organization with a link in the legal community,” says Archambault. “Mr. MacKillop’s presentation at the games was inspirational and shows how important the foundation is to the well-being to people in need in Africa.”
LIFE founder and Toronto labour and employment lawyer Malcolm MacKillop travelled to Law Games as a way to make law students aware of the organization.
Archambault and his team have split their donation to LIFE, giving $500 to World Vision and $500 to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. He claims that about 125 children will be helped by the team’s donation.
