Legal artificial intelligence company Clio has acquired Canadian legal AI and data company Jurisage in line with its newly announced commitment to legal AI development in Canada.

Jurisage created the database Compass, which Clio described as “the largest structured, AI-ready Canadian caselaw asset in the market.” The regularly updated database contains information on over 470,000 cases in 43 courts.

With the acquisition, the database will be integrated into the Clio Work platform, which is set to be rolled out in Canada this year.

“Canadian lawyers are some of the most forward-thinking in the world when it comes to AI. They deserve a platform that matches that ambition. Jurisage brings the legal data, expertise, and longtime service to this market. Combined with the scale and depth of Clio's Intelligent Legal Work Platform, we're building the foundation for whatʼs next in legal AI in Canada. As a Canadian company, we're proud to be making that investment right here at home,” said Jack Newton, Clio’s CEO and founder, in a statement.

Aaron Wenner, co-founder of Jurisage and litigation drafting platform CiteRight, will join Clio as Canadian content strategy manager.

“By combining Jurisage's legal data with Clio's platform, we can build AI that is deeply informed by Canadian law and integrated into the workflows where legal professionals spend their time,” Wenner said.

Clio research revealed that 60 percent of Canadian firms are encouraging AI use, and two-thirds of firms claimed that AI positively affected their revenue. Canada falls behind only Australia in terms of universal AI adoption, surpassing the rate of adoption in the US with regard to almost all legal AI use cases.

“The demand for legal AI in Canada is undeniable. Canadian lawyers need technology that's grounded in the law they practice and integrated into the workflows they rely on every day,” said Luke Slan, Clio’s Canada general manager.

The company indicated that the acquisition kicks off its long-term commitment to legal AI development in Canada.

Jurisage officially merged with CiteRight into Jurisage Group Inc. in January 2024.

Clio caters to over 400,000 legal professionals in over 130 countries. Last November 2025, it acquired vLex for US$1 billion.
