Global law firm Baker McKenzie has bolstered its tax practice by adding international tax lawyer Rob Clary as a partner in its Chicago office.

This strategic move aims to enhance the firm's Chambers Global Band 1 ranked Tax Practice. Rob Clary has a legal career spanning nearly two decades in international taxation. His expertise extends to advising multinational corporations on global tax matters, including the tax implications of cross-border acquisitions, financing transactions, corporate restructurings, joint ventures, and other significant corporate activities.

Clary's advisory scope also covers international transfer pricing and controversial global operations, investments, and transactions matters. His transition to Baker McKenzie marks his departure from a prominent accounting firm.

"As our clients undertake transformative transactions while grappling with an ever-evolving tax landscape, our ability to provide cutting-edge but practical tax advice is more critical than ever," said Salim Rahim, chair of the firm's North America Tax Practice Group. "Rob’s deep experience will be invaluable to clients as they seek pragmatic tax advice that considers their unique business needs. We are thrilled to add Rob to the team.”

Baker McKenzie's tax practice comprises over 900 tax professionals across more than 40 countries. The practice features a collaborative approach, transcending borders and specializations to effectively navigate the evolving tax regimes worldwide. It plays a pivotal role in supporting the firm's M&A practice, offering crucial assistance in post-acquisition integrations, pre-disposition restructurings, and many tax-related issues.

David Miliband, the Managing Partner of Baker McKenzie's Chicago office, lauded Clary as a tax practitioner, stating, “Rob is a leading Tax practitioner in Chicago, serving as a trusted tax advisor to the many global companies based in this market and throughout North America. As we continue to further strengthen our Chicago office, Rob is an outstanding addition to our team and we look forward to working with him to serve our many global clients.”

Clary expressed his excitement about joining Baker McKenzie, “I am so pleased to join Baker McKenzie’s renowned Tax practice, which is in a class by itself in providing world class tax legal services alongside its other leading practices. No other firm can provide this level of holistic advice for clients navigating an increasingly turbulent business and regulatory environment.”

Clary follows the recent arrival of state and local tax lawyer Kent Strader. He frequently speaks at various professional and industry organizations, including Bloomberg, the International Fiscal Association, the Chicago Tax Club, the Tax Executives Institute, and the Practicing Law Institute. Clary has also taught taxation of international transactions at the Chicago-Kent School Law.
