Milbank bolsters Asia restructuring practice with new partner

Nicholas Dunstone has joined Milbank LLP’s Singapore office as a partner in the firm’s financial restructuring group.

Dunstone brings 25 years of experience to his role, having worked as a restructuring specialist for multiple jurisdictions and created a distinguished global practice representing funds and financial institutions in various situations. He started his career in London representing U.S. hedge funds in European distressed situations before moving to an Australian firm to establish a market-leading practice representing global distressed investing funds. He then moved to Hong Kong to join an international law firm's Asian restructuring practice.

Prior to his appointment in Milbank, Dunstone was a partner at Asia Research & Capital Management, where he led investment in private and public credit situations, including primary lending and distressed debt situations across the globe.

Dunstone also includes energy and infrastructure investments among his areas of specialisation.

“We are thrilled to welcome Nick to the firm,” said Milbank chair Scott Edelman. “Nick brings significant knowledge as both a lawyer and investment professional that spans a broad range of geographic markets. His expertise will be invaluable as we continue to expand the scope and capabilities of our global restructuring practice.”

Milbank’s financial restructuring practice group leader Dennis Dunne pointed out that Dunstone was already “a highly regarded restructuring advisor” in Asia.

“The combination of his experience as a lawyer and principal within a leading distressed investing fund provides him with a unique skill set, as well as a depth of understanding of the options, strategy, and leadership required to achieve the best outcome in complex restructuring situations,” Dunne said.

“Nick's addition as a dedicated restructuring expert further highlights the breadth of our services in [Asia] while complementing our ability to service clients on the most complex situations,” added Milbank’s Asia practice and Singapore office managing partner David Zemans. “Nick has a reputation as an excellent lawyer with a vital understanding of the region built over his decades of experience, making him a fantastic addition to the team.”

Milbank LLP’s financial restructuring group is known globally for corporate restructurings and bankruptcy cases. The practice is at the forefront of some of the largest and most complex corporate restructuring matters in the world, led by Dunne in New York and partner Yushan Ng in London. Dunstone's addition completed the firm's global coverage of leading restructuring specialists by expanding the practice in Asia.

Dunstone received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of South Australia and as a solicitor in England & Wales.
