Seven new directors take seats on the board of independent business law firm alliance Meritas

Seven new directors from across Europe, Asia, and America have been elected to the board of global independent business law firm alliance Meritas, as announced at the organization’s annual general meeting this year.

The following commence three-year terms with the board:

  • Hans G. Helwig, GvW Graf von Westphalen (Berlin, Germany)
  • Jeffrey Lim, Joyce A. Tan & Partners LLC (Singapore)
  • Mindy M. Morton, Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP (Palo Alto, California)
  • Urmas Ustav, WIDEN (Tallin, Estonia)
  • Adelina Villalobos, BLP (San José, Costa Rica)
  • Judith Wallace, Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP (New York)
  • Jon A. Woodall, McBrayer (Lexington, Kentucky)

The group will take the lead in executing Meritas’ strategic plan, manage the network’s global development, maintain the network’s quality standards, and serve as international Meritas brand ambassadors.

“These lawyers understand the importance of Meritas in serving the legal needs of companies around the world, effectively and efficiently, by leveraging their trusted collaborations. They represent the diverse strength and breadth of our network,” said Meritas president Sona Pancholy in a statement. “They not only deliver high-quality solutions for their clients through Meritas, they also bring unique insights on how our network can best meet changing industry demands.”

Member firm Cuesta Campos hosted the 2025 Meritas annual general meeting in Mexico City. The network counts 175 firms and over 9,200 lawyers as members.

Women’s leadership awards

Meritas also announced the following winners of its Women’s Leadership Awards at the annual general meeting.

  • Woman of the Year: new board director Mindy M. Morton (Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, San Diego, California
  • Rising Star: Malvinderjit Kaur (LAW Partnership, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
  • Returner of the Year: Alfonsina Bronzovich Canga (Allende & Brea, Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  • Mentor of the Year: Charlotte Whitworth (Howard Kennedy, London, UK: England and Wales)
  • Male Ally of the Year: Mark Buckovich (McDonald Carano LLP, Las Vegas, Nevada)
  • Meritas member firm demonstrating a commitment to supporting and nurturing women in the legal industry and recognizing the talents of women on staff: BLP (with offices in San José, Costa Rica; Managua, Nicaragua; San Salvador, El Salvador; Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and San Pedro Sula, Honduras)

“We’re shining a light on the critical role of women and the importance of inclusiveness to inspire and motivate senior leadership to promote further advancement and equity for women lawyers,” Pancholy said.

Amsterdam-based Annejet Balm, leadership council chair of the Meritas Women’s Leadership Congress, said that the award winners’ “outstanding leadership and achievements are an inspiration to all women in the legal industry and the awards truly showcase what it means to be an ally to women lawyers.”
