UK Law Society director dies at 68

Stephen Denyer, director of strategic relationships at the UK Law Society, has died at the age of 68, reported the Law Society Gazette.

“Stephen made a wide ranging and enduring contribution to the legal profession both here and abroad over the full length of a very distinguished legal career”, Law Society chief executive Ian Jeffery said in a statement published by the Gazette. “Stephen was a much-loved colleague and mentor, sharing expertise with and creating opportunities for many colleagues across many organisations, including of course our own. His wisdom and his open and generous spirit will be missed by everyone across the organisation, our membership and the legal community in the UK and internationally”.

Colin Passmore, chair of the City of London Law Society, also described Denyer as someone who revitalised the Law Society’s relationships with City law firms.

Denyer began his legal career at Allen & Overy as a trainee after his admission to the roll in 1980. Over a 36-year tenure at the firm, he oversaw the establishment, expansion or management of 11 Allen & Overy offices across the globe.

He was also a member of the International Bar Association’s management board and co-chair of the IBA Rule of Law Forum. He was also a member of the Council of the American Bar Association Section of International Law and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
