Washington lawyer Abbe Lowell to assist Trump administration’s targets with new law firm

Abbe Lowell, a Washington-based lawyer, has quit law firm Winston & Strawn to establish Lowell & Associates, a new law firm seeking to represent those targeted by US President Donald Trump’s administration, including former government officials, Reuters reported.

Lowell & Associates shared that its defence work will cover individuals and institutions dealing with politicized investigations, civil, and administrative actions, and clients challenging the US government efficiency department’s and the federal government’s cancellation of grant funding, according to an article from Reuters.

Lowell acts for Letitia James, New York attorney general, after the Trump administration referred allegations that she falsified real estate records to the US justice department. Reuters noted that James has denied the allegations.

Lowell has previously defended Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, against criminal charges for gun and tax offences. Hunter Biden received a pardon last December, Reuters said. Lowell also previously advised US Senator Bob Menendez, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner.

Lawyers joining new firm

Lowell & Associates includes two former lawyers each from the firms of Winston & Strawn and Skadden Arps. The lawyers who quit from Skadden Arps did so due to their former firm’s response to Trump’s executive orders aimed at the legal industry, said the article from Reuters.

Skadden and eight other law firms made deals with Trump’s administration to avoid the impacts of these orders, Reuters reported. Four other firms brought lawsuits in response to the orders imposing restrictions on them based on their alleged weaponization of the legal system against Trump or his allies, Reuters added.

Rachel Cohen, one of the ex-Skadden attorneys joining Lowell & Associates, said there should be lawyers “willing to stand up to the government when it oversteps,” according to Reuters.

Efforts against administration

Over 200 suits challenge policy initiatives introduced by Trump’s administration, including measures limiting the rights of immigrants and transgender people or stopping agency and grant funding, said the Reuters article.

Democracy Forward, an advocacy group, brought over 50 such legal challenges since the election, Reuters noted. Democracy Forward shared that it retained Brian Netter, ex-partner at Mayer Brown and a prominent lawyer who worked at the US justice department during Biden’s presidency.
