Mantaro Silver Corp., a B.C.-based mining company, has announced the appointment of Dr. Jorge Masson Pazos, one of the main partners at Estudio Navarro & Pazos Abogados, as Peruvian general manager and legal counsel.

Pazos, who joined the Lima-based firm in 1990, has focused his practice on labour law and civil law, including the social security and tax issues connected to the employment relationship. His other legal practice areas include property, land, water and mining, constitutional and administrative law, litigation and arbitration. He has acted for national and transnational clients in numerous significant cases.

Pazos has been an attorney for a national airline, a role in which he practised civil law, corporate law, labour law, transportation law, insurance law, aeronautical law and administrative law, said a news release. In this position, he assisted in administering many judicial, civil, criminal, labor and constitutional processes.

Pazos has acted as a legal representative for many national and international firms and as arbiter of payroll at the Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima, the Centre for Conflict Resolution of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, AMCHAM Arbitration Centre and the Agency State Procurement Supervisor (OSCE).

Admitted to the Lima bar in 1989, Pazos took his legal studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, where his thesis focused on the modalities of contemporary contracting, and finished his post-graduate studies at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, ESAN and Pacific University. He has taught labour law and patrimonial civil law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He is fluent in Spanish, French and English.

In his new role, Pazos will replace Robert Zalles, who was general manager for Peru, and Luis Saenz, who offered advisory services.

In the news release, Mantaro conveyed its well wishes to Zalles and Saenz in their endeavours in the future. Mantaro holds a 100 per cent interest in its flagship Santas Gloria Silver Property, as well as in the San Jose, La Purisima, Cerro Luque and Huaranay Properties.
