40 years & 10,000 families: giving back in appreciation

Share Lawyers seeks charity nominations for its nationwide 40 Days of Giving campaign

40 years & 10,000 families: giving back in appreciation

When David and Wendy Share started their law practice in 1987, their primary objective was to make legal services more accessible to Canadians. They did this by offering a menu of services with transparent pricing and by opening offices in easily accessible locations in local communities across the Greater Toronto Area.

Forty years later, Share Lawyers is still a family-led firm, with David, Wendy, and their daughter Samantha at the helm and an amazing team carrying the work forward. The team at Share Lawyers is as focused on its clients as ever, particularly those whose long-term disability claims have been cut off or denied. As the firm has grown, so has the experience it brings to that work.

Each file gives the firm a better understanding of how insurers evaluate a claim, what kind of evidence will stand up to scrutiny, and how best to see a client through such a difficult time.

The original premise is unchanged: no one should be left to stand against a powerful institution on their own.

A significant milestone

In the lead-up to 2027 and its fortieth anniversary, Share Lawyers recently opened its 10,000th file.

Each file represents a person whose world has been turned upside down by injury or illness, and often a family helping them deal with the fallout. A denied disability claim is seldom just a legal issue. By the time someone’s long-term disability claim has been denied, there may be months of lost income behind them, bills to pay, and children to feed.

“Every one of those 10,000 files is someone who trusted us at one of the hardest moments of their life,” remarks David Share. “Disability insurance is a complex area of law. But after many thousands of successful claims against virtually every major insurer in Canada, clear patterns emerge in how claims are adjudicated and what evidence will hold up. There are offsets and surveillance to contend with, and files that appear simple can become anything but.”

Through all of it, Share Lawyers is there to guide clients every step of the way.

Looking beyond the file

For decades, the firm’s clients have made it clear that the legal side is only part of their challenge. While Share Lawyers manages their claim, many clients have had to rely on others: a food bank when benefits were cut off, a patient association to make sense of a new diagnosis, or a community centre where they felt welcome. These are essential supports.

To mark its anniversary, Share Lawyers wants to acknowledge and celebrate that wider circle.

40 years, 40 days of giving

The firm has launched a campaign to do just that. Between November 2026 and the end of February 2027, Share Lawyers will support forty charities and community programs across Canada.

Rather than choosing forty recipients on its own, the firm is asking clients, former clients, lawyers and doctors in its network, and the public at large to nominate the organizations that have made a difference in their lives. Some of the most meaningful work is done by small, local groups that are all too easy to miss.

This is not an appeal for funds; the firm is providing all of the financial support. The firm is looking for your perspective on where that support is needed most. Nominations are open to everyone, client or not. Share Lawyers would also like to hear from people who wish to share their experience with the firm in writing or on video.

How nominations work

Nominating an organization is easy and takes only a few minutes. Visit the campaign page and share the name of the charity or community program, where it operates, and a sentence or two about the difference it has made for you or someone you know.

Registered charities, food banks, patient associations, community centres, and grassroots groups are all welcome.

Nominations close in mid-February, and the selected organizations will be announced throughout the campaign on the 40 Days of Giving page tracker.

A heartfelt thank you

Share Lawyers is grateful to the lawyers, healthcare professionals, and clients across Canada who have referred people to the firm over the past 40 years, to its dedicated team, and to its 10,000 families.

The fortieth anniversary is an opportunity to say thank you and to pass some of that support on to the organizations that help people put their lives back together, while Share Lawyers continues to focus on its clients’ insurance claims.
