McCarthy Tétrault LLP has announced the appointment of April Kosten – who has assisted employers with complex workplace matters involving human rights, privacy, workplace investigations, and employment disputes – as a Calgary-based partner in its national labour and employment practice.

“April is an outstanding addition to our Calgary team and to our national Labour & Employment platform,” said Tim Lawson, head of the firm’s national labour and employment group, in a news release.

Kosten has helped clients design compliant workplace alcohol and drug testing policies and address challenges arising in this evolving legal area.

“April’s deep knowledge of workplace law, particularly in areas such as labour laws, human rights and drug and alcohol testing policies, will be invaluable to our clients navigating shifting workforce priorities and issues,” Lawson said in the news release.

Kosten’s advocacy experience has included acting for employers before courts, labour boards, and arbitration panels across various employment disputes.

Her experience has also encompassed collective bargaining, accommodation and disability matters, workplace harassment and investigations, executive employment arrangements, and labour and employment considerations in connection with business transactions and organizational shifts.

“Her arrival reflects our commitment to our clients to provide top-tier talent that meets their increasingly complex and varied needs,” Lawson said in the news release.

Kosten has joined partners Stephanie Henry and John Gilmore in the firm’s labour and employment group. In its news release, McCarthy Tétrault shared that Kosten’s arrival aims to help the firm meet the evolving needs of Alberta’s dynamic business landscape.

“I look forward to working with my new colleagues to help our Firm’s clients turn complex labour and employment challenges into actionable strategies that protect their people, operations, and long-term business goals,” Kosten said in the firm’s news release

Kosten earned admission to the Alberta bar in 2009.

Recognition of Kosten

The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory has featured Kosten as a leading lawyer who has been repeatedly recommended for advising employers in the areas of employment law and workplace human rights.

In 2023, Lexpert recognized her as one of its Rising Stars when she was working as a partner and Calgary practice leader at Dentons Canada LLP’s employment and labour group.
