This marks the first time the appeal court will sit outside the Halifax Law Courts
As part of an inaugural event, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal intends to visit Sydney, Cape Breton on Sept. 26 to hear three appeals in its September/October docket in the community of Membertou.
This visit marks the first time the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal will sit outside the Halifax Law Courts, according to a news release by the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society, shared by the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.
The event aims to introduce the public to the appeal court’s work and to increase societal understanding of the role of the judiciary and the courts in general. As a part of the visit, the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society is coordinating with the appeal court to offer a free legal education session hosted by the judiciary for members of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.
This educational opportunity will concentrate on the areas of advocacy, criminal case law, and the judicial review process. It seeks to give members the chance to hear from and engage directly with members of the bench.
Specifically, Justice Robin Gogan will moderate a panel discussion on advocacy. During this discussion, judges from all levels of the courts will share their insights on professionalism, civility, competence, and counsel’s ethical obligations, as well as their other perspectives on both written and oral advocacy.
Next, Justice Anne Derrick will provide participants with a Supreme Court of Canada criminal law update. Justice Cindy Bourgeois will then deliver a presentation on the judicial review process.
The educational session, which features a hybrid in-person and online format, will take place from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on Sept. 26. Members intending to participate can register in advance, with the form scheduled to close on Sept. 25.
On the date of the inaugural event, in-person attendees should go to the Jenu Room of Membertou Trade & Convention Centre on 50 Maillard St., Membertou, Nova Scotia. The Cape Breton Barristers’ Society will be hosting a bench and bar dinner on the evening of Sept. 26. Members of the appeal court and of the Cape Breton judiciary are expected to attend.
“It’s a great time of year to visit Cape Breton!” said the news release by the Cape Breton Barristers’ Society.
The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society is sponsoring a livestream for online attendees, with the link to be sent via email as the event date approaches.
