Roundup of law firm hires, promotions and departures: Week of Feb. 14

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions and departures.

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP

The firm has one new partner, Martin Legault, who is based in Montreal. He is a member of the firm’s tax group. He also focuses his practice on commercial transactions.

Éric Bédard, managing partner for the firm’s Quebec Region, said that Legault could offer clients his competence in income tax matters and in commercial dealings. “His experience in transactional tax with a global accounting firm adds to our team’s diversified service offering,” Bédard said.

Langlois lawyers, LLP

The firm has one new partner, Christiane Brizard, who is based in the firm’s Montreal office. She centres her practice on the fields of governance, ethics and professional law. Brizard is also an accredited mediator.

Jean-François Gagnon, the firm’s chief executive officer, said that Brizard’s experience in mediation and arbitration would benefit the firm. Gagnon additionally praised Brizard’s “rigour, know-how and interpersonal skills.”

The firm has 28 new partners:

Dave Leonard, the firm’s chief executive officer, congratulated the new partners on their appointments. Leonard said that each new addition demonstrated “exceptional dedication to the values on which the firm was founded: passion, excellence, and innovation.”

McMillan LLP

The firm has one new partner, Jody L. Wivcharuk, who has joined the firm’s Calgary office. She is a member of the firm’s oil and gas group and its competition and antitrust group.

According to Adam C. Maerov, the firm’s office management partner in Calgary, Wivcharuk has played, over a period spanning more than two decades, an instrumental part in the growth of Alberta’s oil and gas industry. “When it comes to innovative structures in conventional and unconventional resources, Jody has seen it all,” Maerov added.

Minden Gross LLP

The Toronto-based firm has one new partner, Marc Senderowitz. He has joined the firm’s commercial real estate group. He has advised clients on various aspects of real estate dealings such as joint ventures, land development matters, financing, acquisitions and sales.

MLT Aikins LLP

MLT Aikins congratulated Theodor Bock, former partner in the firm’s Winnipeg office, on his appointment as a judge at the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba. During his time with the firm, he was a member of the litigation group, with experience in civil, commercial, administrative, insurance and public law matters. He also acted as an arbitrator, mainly for disputes involving labour and commercial law.
