Ataullahjan is legal counsel at Nunavut government, while St-Coeur is a family lawyer
The Law Society of Nunavut has confirmed that Shaanzéh Ataullahjan, its president, and Ariane St-Coeur, its vice president, have taken office following the organization’s June 4 annual general meeting and elections.
According to the law society, both Ataullahjan and St-Coeur will serve two-year terms.
“We take this opportunity to thank outgoing Executive members for their time and invaluable commitment: Joanne Mesher, Kenneth Chatarpaul and Romy Leclerc,” the law society stated in its update.
The law society then called for nominations among its active resident members for the two remaining vacancies in its executive board. These two executives will hold their roles for one-year terms.
Nominations, which may include a brief biography, are due via email by Friday, July 17, at 12 p.m. ET. The law society intends to use these bios in the election voting process.
Per the notice of election, the law society will hold the election for the remaining executive members on Wednesday, Aug. 5, in line with the Legal Profession Act and the Rules of the Law Society of Nunavut.
Shaanzéh Ataullahjan
According to LinkedIn, Ataullahjan has acted as legal counsel for the Nunavut government in Iqaluit since October 2022 and as a researcher at York University since August 2020.
Before that, Ataullahjan worked as an associate at Nazami & Associates in the Greater Toronto Area from 2019–20 and as a consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, from 2016–17.
Ataullahjan earned admission to the Ontario bar in 2018. Ataullahjan holds JDs from the University of Toronto and the National University of Singapore and a BA in peace studies and conflict resolution from the University of Toronto.
Ariane St-Coeur
According to LinkedIn, St-Coeur has served as a family law lawyer at Nunavut Legal Aid in Rankin Inlet since October 2025. Before that, St-Coeur worked as a lawyer at Cabinet d’avocat Rita Godin in Bathurst, New Brunswick, beginning in 2023.
St-Coeur has studied and earned qualifications from Université Lumière Lyon 2 and Université de Sherbrooke.
