McInnes Cooper has acquired Toronto corporate immigration practice Kranc Associates, extending its reach to Ontario.

The deal closed on July 1. According to McInnes Cooper, the pickup represents progression on its growth strategy by providing it an instant presence in Toronto.

The acquisition incorporates Kranc Associates’ specialist practice with McInnes Cooper’s existing business law focus. McInnes Cooper indicated that the combination of practice areas generates a new connection point for clients with needs crossing provincial and national borders.

The firm also highlighted the overlap of corporate immigration work with employment, tax, corporate, and regulatory issues.

“We have served clients with needs that extend into Ontario and beyond for many years. This transaction allows us to deepen those relationships, establish a meaningful presence in Toronto and bring our collaborative, solutions-driven approach to a broader Canadian audience,” said Kevin Kiley, McInnes Cooper managing partner, in a statement.

Kranc Associates principal Benjamin Kranc, who leads the practice, added that the merger of the two firms would generate new opportunities for clients requiring complex corporate immigration support and expand access legal and advisory services.

McInnes Cooper had previously merged with The Breton Law Group and LaFosse MacLeod in Sydney and with Barteaux Labour and Employment Lawyers Inc. in Halifax.

McInnes Cooper relocates to Membertou

This week, McInnes Cooper also moved to a new office in Nova Scotia’s Membertou that accommodates 61.

Sydney office lead partner Dwight Rudderham said the move was driven by the office’s growth since 2022.

“Since our 2022 merger, we have seen sustained growth in both our client base and our team here in Cape Breton,” said Dwight Rudderham, KC, Office Lead Partner in Sydney. “This new office gives us the space to build on that momentum and continue serving clients across the region with the depth and responsiveness they expect from McInnes Cooper.”

McInnes Cooper selected the Membertou area to support local economic development in an Indigenous-led business hub.

“McInnes Cooper is a strong, strategic partner to Membertou. As our advisors, we’ve achieved new levels of success with acquisitions like Clearwater Seafoods and NewDock – the St. John’s dockyard. We’re proud to welcome their Cape Breton team to our new offices in Membertou at Mi’kma’ki Place,” said Chief Terry Paul, Membertou chief and CEO, in a statement.
