Miller Thomson LLP has announced its acquisition of Vancouver-based Mogan Daniels Slager LLP (MDS), a boutique law firm focused on private company mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and private equity, as part of its strategy to expand its national business law practice.

The acquisition will bring MDS's entire team to Miller Thomson in early November, including 11 lawyers comprising four partners, one founder and counsel, and six associates. The move will increase Miller Thomson's corporate, M&A and securities group to approximately 130 lawyers across five provinces.

MDS advises entrepreneurs, private equity funds, family offices and growth-oriented companies in Western Canada and on Canada-U.S. cross-border transactions. Its practice covers mid-market M&A, debt and growth equity financing, and private equity fund formation.

Enzo Di Iorio, chair of Miller Thomson, said the acquisition strengthens the firm's ability to support entrepreneurs and private company investors nationwide.

"Our two teams share a business-minded, practical approach to advising entrepreneurs and private company investors," Di Iorio said in a statement. "This acquisition bolsters our ability to support clients across Canada, and we see clear opportunities to grow together."

Jay Hoffman, chair of Miller Thomson's business law group, said MDS will strengthen the firm's mid-market M&A and private equity offering in Western Canada while expanding its capacity to advise on complex domestic and international transactions.

The acquisition follows Miller Thomson's recruitment of 38 lateral lawyers since January 2025, including 13 partners in its corporate, M&A and securities practice. The firm has also expanded its financial services, tax, real estate and private client services practices.

MDS clients will gain access to Miller Thomson's national capabilities in banking and finance, tax, real estate, competition and other business law areas.

Ben Slager, MDS co-founder and CEO, said Miller Thomson's national platform will provide additional resources as clients' legal needs become more complex.

“While we’ve been approached many times over the years for a potential acquisition, we wanted a firm that combined national reach with a truly entrepreneurial and collaborative culture,” Slager said. “As our clients’ needs become more complex, Miller Thomson gives us the depth and platform to create new opportunities for our clients and our team. We look forward to joining the Firm in early November.”

The combined team will focus on expanding services in M&A, private equity transactions, fund formation and related business law practices across Canada.
