Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: January 22, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Clark Wilson LLP

Clark Wilson has recently announced the promotion of five lawyers to partners:

  • Bo Carter, now a partner in the insurance and insurance coverage groups, specializes in insurance defence, coverage advice, and resolving complex insurance disputes with strategic efficiency.
  • Catherine Repel, promoted to partner in the employment and labour group, offers a comprehensive range of services, from terminations and wrongful dismissal claims to workplace investigations and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Dani Marshall, the newly appointed commercial real estate group partner, specializes in various real estate matters, including municipal approvals, drafting land-related agreements, and commercial property transactions.
  • Jeannette Aucoin, now a partner in the family law group, specializes in matrimonial litigation, separation agreements, and reproductive technology law compliance.
  • Polly Storey, promoted to partner in the estates and trusts, elder law, and estates and trusts opinions and appeals groups, focuses on resolving contentious estate and trust matters.

Dentons Canada LLP

Dentons Canada has announced the election of Mercedes Hitesman as the firm's new office managing partner in Edmonton, effective February 1. Hitesman is a partner in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution group. She has nearly 20 years of experience in practising personal injury law. In addition to her new role as Edmonton managing partner, Hitesman will join the National Management Committee and be directly involved in the firm's day-to-day operations and the execution of the firm's strategic plan and vision.

Federation of Ontario Law Associations (FOLA)

FOLA has announced the appointment of Ian Hu as Director of Policy and Advocacy, effective January 15. Hu has 15 years of experience as a lawyer in private practice and as the face of the province's legal malpractice insurer. He has also held leadership positions with law associations in Canada and the United States.

"I am excited to help FOLA and its stakeholders push forward the justice agenda. We will enthusiastically meet the challenges the legal system faces now and into the future," Hu said.
