Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: January 8, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Aird & Berlis LLP

Aird & Berlis has welcomed Faye Kravetz as a partner in the firm's Tax, Estates & Trusts and Tax Controversy/Tax Litigation Groups. Kravetz has worked with the Canada Revenue Agency, where she served as an industry specialist in the Income Tax Rulings Directorate and as a national avoidance technical advisor in the Abusive Tax Avoidance and Technical Support Division.

Adrienne Ho and Shaun Parsons have also joined the firm as associates. Ho specializes in working with stakeholders on restructuring and insolvency mandates. Parsons' practice encompasses insolvency proceedings, fraud, and commercial disputes.

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP

The firm has announced the appointment of Jennifer Arndt as office managing partner of the firm's Calgary office, effective January 1. Arndt joined DLA Piper (Canada) in 2005 and became a partner in 2020. She is a vital member of the Capital Markets Group and has over 20 years of experience assisting clients with securities, ‎corporate finance, banking law, and transactional corporate and commercial matters.‎ She has extensive experience representing TSX and TSXV-listed companies on ‎‎corporate finance, securities, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial transactions.

"Jennifer is widely respected for her business acumen, strong leadership skills, and forward-thinking approach to client matters," Canada managing partner Robert Seidel said. "As a member of the Capital Markets group, Jennifer has an innovative and results-driven practice that I am positive will translate well to her new position."

Fillmore Riley LLP

Fillmore Riley LLP has recently welcomed Sven Hombach, Darrell Kreel, Annika Friesen, Kalev Anniko and Cole Southall to the partnership.

McMillan LLP

McMillan has named Andrew Powers a partner in the firm's Toronto office. Powers specializes in capital markets and securities, mergers and acquisitions, natural resources and energy.

Ogletree Deakins

The firm has named Kathryn Bird as its office managing partner in Toronto. Bird has worked with Ogletree Deakins for nearly two years. She specializes in employment, human rights, and labour law. She has advised employers, social service providers, school boards, and municipalities regarding issues arising from employment relationships and the provision of services to the public.

Scarfone Hawkins LLP

Barry Yellin has joined Scarfone Hawkins LLP. He specializes in commercial and civil litigation. Before joining Scarfone Hawkins LLP, he worked with Ross & McBride LLP for over 20 years.

Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (TDS)

TDS has welcomed Katherine Jones to the firm. Jones's practice encompasses property and development, focusing on agricultural, commercial, construction, industrial, and residential real estate transactions, property development, mortgage financing, mortgage sale and foreclosure proceedings, leasing, and succession planning. Jones previously worked as district registrar with the Manitoba Land Title Office and deputy registrar of the Manitoba Personal Property Registry.
