Torys has beefed up its commercial real estate offering in Calgary with new partner Paul Logan, counsel Larissa Svekla, and associate Alina Kaiser. All three make the jump from Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP.

Paul Logan

Logan helped lead and develop Fasken’s real estate group in Calgary. He brings experience with matters involving acquisitions and dispositions of office, industrial, and retail properties as well as those involving mortgage financing, leasing, and development and planning.

He has acted for pension funds, life insurance companies, major landlords, and institutional lenders. Moreover, he has negotiated leases and subleases for office, industrial, and retail space for domestic and international landlords and tenants.

The Lexpert-ranked lawyer has advised on the real estate aspects of transactions involving purchases, ground leases and development of power plants, wind, solar and hydroelectric energy infrastructure, project financings, and share and asset purchases. In addition to his tenure at Fasken, he also logged stints with Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP and Walsh Wilkins Creighton LLP according to LinkedIn.

Logan once chaired the CBA South Alberta commercial real estate section. He also sits on the Calgary Highlanders Regimental Association board.

Larissa Svekla

Svekla has tackled matters involving acquisitions and dispositions, land ownership and structuring arrangements, commercial leasing, real estate development, and foreign ownership compliance. Her clients have included major real estate owners, advisors, asset and property managers, and developers.

She has worked on the acquisition and disposition of high-value real estate across office, industrial, retail, multi-family, and mixed-use developments. She has also advised on single-asset and interprovincial portfolio transactions and the real estate aspects of mergers and acquisitions.

Moreover, Svekla has drafted and negotiated high-profile leases for office, industrial, and retail space on behalf of landlords and tenants. In addition, she has handled private infrastructure projects involving data centers and other critical infrastructure assets as well as public-private partnership projects like light-rail transit systems, transportation networks, schools, and wastewater treatment facilities.

Alina Kaiser

Kaiser has assisted clients with real property acquisitions and dispositions, leasing and financing matters related to office, commercial, industrial, multi-residential, and vacant land assets. Her clients have included pension funds, asset managers and developers, and energy and infrastructure companies.

She received the Gowling WLG Prize in Securities Regulation, the Art and Science of Advocacy Prize, the Jack Walker QC Award for Excellence in Legal Ethics and Professionalism, and a Dean’s Gold Key. She is part of the Association of Women Lawyers, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Law Society of Alberta.
