Osler, Dickinson Wright, Miller Thomson, Bennett Jones, Blakes appear in commercial suits this week

Chaitons, Lenczner Slaght, Advocan Law act in high-value commercial cases

A partner of Chaitons LLP represented the plaintiff in a $230-million case, while Lenczner Slaght, Advocan Law, Minden Gross, Dickinson Wright, and Miller Thomson also made appearances in commercial list matters valued at over $10 million this week.

The week’s most notable commercial case was the $230,563,776 case Bank of Montreal, as Administrative Agent for a Syndicate of Lenders v Unity Health Toronto et al. Here, Chaitons LLP partner Harvey Chaiton advised plaintiff Bank of Montreal. His bankruptcy and insolvency practice focuses on receiverships and corporate restructurings. Unity Health Toronto and four other defendants appeared to be unrepresented.

The next most notable commercial case was the $16.6-million case Ang v Second Closet Incorporated et al. F. Scott Turton, solo practitioner, represented the plaintiff. Lenczner Slaght partner Matthew Lerner advised defendant Second Closet Incorporated, while Advocan Law LLP partner Gabriel Latner acted for Mark Ang Holdings Inc. and one other defendant. Latner’s work focuses on technology licensing and corporate and commercial transactions.

A third notable commercial case was the $11-million case Kauffman v Fazari et al. Dickinson Wright LLP partner David Preger represented respondent Rosen Goldenberg Inc. Miller Thomson LLP partner James Zibarras advised EMP Epic Property Management Inc. and two other defendants. The other defendants appeared to be unrepresented.

Minden Gross LLP partner Raymond Slattery acted for the plaintiff. Slattery handles all facets of insolvency litigation, including commercial reorganizations and restructurings under federal laws like the Companies Creditors’ Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
