Roussel replaces retired Justice David Near
Minister of Justice and Attorney General David Lametti has announced the appointment of Sylvie Roussel to the Federal Court of Appeal.
“I wish Justice Roussel every success in her new role,” Lametti said. “I know she will serve Canadians well as a member of the Federal Court of Appeal.”
Justice Roussel was a Federal Court judge at the time of her appointment. She replaces retired Justice David Near, who retired in Sept. 2021.
Roussel began her legal career as a lawyer and partner at Gatineau-based law firm Noël et Associés. In 2007, she joined the Security Intelligence Review Committee as a senior counsel. The SIRC is an independent oversight and review body for the operations of the Canadian Security Intelligence. In 2015, she was appointed as a judge of the Federal Court.
Roussel has been a part-time law professor at the University of Ottawa – Civil Law Section and a frequent speaker at various legal conferences. In addition, she was a co-editor of the publications La Cour suprême en bref and Supreme Court News and has published numerous articles about the Supreme Court of Canada in the Journal du Barreau.
Roussel has been affiliated with several legal professional associations. She is a former member of the Canadian Bar Association’s Liaison Committee and National Administrative Law Section Committee. She also became a member of the SCC’s Ottawa Agents Practice and Procedures Committee.
Roussel earned her law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1987. She was called to the Quebec bar and Ontario bar in 1987 and 1995.
