Minister of Justice announces judicial appointments in Quebec: Lachance, Marquis, Boctor

Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the appointments of Myriam Lachance as a puisne judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec and Louis Marquis and Audrey Boctor as judges of the Superior Court of Quebec.

Myriam Lachance, formerly a Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montréal, has been appointed as a puisne Judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec in Montréal. Lachance obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sherbrooke and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1994.

She was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in 2017 and previously served as a judge of the Criminal and Penal Division of the Court of Quebec. Before her judicial appointments, Lachance prasticed in criminal law, disciplinary law, professional ethics, and internal police investigations. She has also taught at the Université de Sherbrooke, the École du Barreau, and the Cégep de Sherbrooke.

Louis Marquis, a mediator and arbitrator at Marquis médiation et arbitrage Inc. in Sherbrooke, has been appointed as a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the districts of Saint François and Bedford in Sherbrooke.

Marquis graduated from the Université de Sherbrooke, the University of Cambridge, and the University of British Columbia. He has held several academic positions, including dean and vice-rector, and has authored numerous books on legal matters. Marquis, an accredited arbitrator and mediator, has worked with tahe World Bank and the United Nations Development Program on legislative and judicial reforms. He has been recognized with several awards, including the title of Emeritus Lawyer from the Barreau du Québec and the Canadian Bar Association’s Paul-André-Crépeau Medal.

Audrey Boctor, a partner at IMK LLP in Montréal, has been appointed as a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montréal. Boctor graduated from McGill University’s Faculty of Law. She began her career as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada and later practised and taught law in New York before joining IMK LLP in 2010.

As a litigator, Boctor has worked on a wide range of legal matters, including constitutional, administrative, civil, and commercial law, often pro bono. Boctor has been recognized for her contributions to advancing equality for LGBTQ2+ individuals and has received multiple accolades/ She has also served in leadership roles with the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

In a statement, Minister Virani expressed confidence in the new appointees, "I wish Justices Lachance, Marquis, and Boctor every success as they take on their new roles. I am confident they will serve Quebecers well as members of the Court of Appeal and the Superior Court of Quebec."
