Akosua Matthews

Associate, Falconers LLP

Akosua Matthews has been active on cases that address critical social justice issues for Indigenous people in Canada. She is co-counsel for Nishnawbe Aski Nation on the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada v. Attorney General of Canada case currently before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. She also worked with the Nishnawbe Aski Nation to help craft community-focused solutions that address the unique challenges facing remote and northern First Nations communities. As a result, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation successfully obtained two significant orders from the tribunal: a remoteness quotient table, which aims to quantify the cost of service delivery to remote, northern communities; and a choose life order, which created a streamlined process for accessing mental health funding to support communities where youth are at risk of suicide. Matthews was a Rhodes Scholar and recently joined the board of the YMCA of Greater Toronto as the youngest board member ever elected. She was also recently appointed as vice president of the board of the Regent Park Community Health Centre.
