Lawyers who make their livelihood defending those charged with criminal offence are often asked “Why do you defend someone, even when you know they are guilty?” The answer from those at Canadian Lawyer’s list of Top 10 Criminal Boutiques is simple: “Because all of us deserve the best defence possible, guilty or not.”

Not only do criminal law practitioners feel that it is important to defend the individuals charged, it’s also about making our legal system accountable through having courts rule on how and when the law should apply. Fighting a criminal charge on the basis that the law infringes of a person’s Charter rights is not a moot point, or “getting off on a technicality.” It gets to the bottom of what makes Canada a democracy.

Luckily, this year’s crop of winners was up to the task, taking clients through the process of how to deal with charges and the evidence, how to fight the charges if possible, or plead guilty and get the best possible outcome under the circumstances.

Criminal law lawyers also had to figure out the best way to defend clients remotely, given we’re still in the middle the COVID-19 pandemic. remotely rather than face-to-face. Lawyers more familiar being part of a in-person trial in a courtroom had to cope with witnesses giving testimony by virtual means.

This year’s winners include:  Neuberger & Partners LLP, Abergel Goldstein & Partners LLP, Bayne Sellar Ertel Carter and Caramanna Friedberg Barristers & Solicitors LLP.

Canadian Lawyer congratulates all the winners! The full list of winners can be found here.
