Canadian Lawyer has announced the country’s top family law teams for 2026, a new recognition for firms that have exemplified excellence in terms of legal service delivery, innovation, community service, and technological adoption.

According to the inaugural edition of this special report, the winning teams have stood out for their ability to communicate clearly with their clients, including by updating them on each step of their matters, carefully conveying difficult messages, and responding to queries in a timely manner.

The awardees have also devoted efforts to pursuing out-of-court processes such as alternative dispute resolution, mediation, and negotiation before resorting to litigation. They also help their clients get ready to participate in mediation and negotiation.

The top teams have measured success not by binary legal outcomes but by the extent to which the results have aligned with client goals.

The winning teams have also worked to adopt technology selectively and to impose clear boundaries to ensure that human judgment remains the final arbiter in some arenas.

The awardees have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) tools to boost speed, productivity, and consistency in areas such as legal research, document drafting and formatting, and administrative efficiency.

The best teams have a keen understanding that AI cannot comprehend the emotional context of individual client circumstances, formulate a strategy that accounts for all the human factors involved, or engage in the legal reasoning that links the specific facts of ongoing matters with judicial precedents.

How winners emerged

Late last year, the Canadian Lawyer team called for nominations for the country’s best family law teams from readers, legal associations, and editorial contributors.

After the internal editorial group arrived at a shortlist of nominees, an independent judging panel of senior family law practitioners assessed the submissions and voted to determine the final list comprising 20 winning teams.

This year’s awardees include Crossroads Law and YLaw. Canadian Lawyer congratulates all of the best family law teams. See more information about the winners for 2026.
