Roundup of law firm hires, promotions and departures: Sept. 16 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures and other announcements.

Dentons Canada LLP

Dentons welcomes Michael C. DeCosimo as partner in its Toronto office. DeCosimo focuses his practice on corporate and securities law, with an emphasis on M&A, corporate finance, strategic negotiations, corporate governance, investment funds and private equity.

“Michael’s reputation as lead counsel and a trusted advisor to executives, senior management and boards will be of huge benefit to our clients within Canada and internationally,” said Blair McCreadie, managing partner of the firm’s Toronto office.

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP

DLA Piper has appointed Veronica Monteiro as office managing partner of its Edmonton office, succeeding Rachel Hamilton in the role. Monteiro belongs to the firm’s corporate, real estate ‎and pension and benefits groups.

“Adept at handling complex issues, respected ‎by our clients and sought out by her colleagues for her depth of knowledge, integrity and approachable manner, Veronica is an excellent choice to lead the Edmonton office,” said Robert Seidel, Q.C., Canada managing partner.

Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP

Virginie Gauthier is a new Toronto-based partner in the firm’s restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency group.

“As Canada’s financial sector continues to adapt to the challenges of the post-COVID economy, Virginie promises to be a critical resource for our clients at a time when bold solutions are in high demand,” said Mark Ledwell, Toronto office managing partner.

Lax O'Sullivan Lisus Gottlieb LLP

The firm announced that Terrence O’Sullivan, one of its founding partners, is leaving to devote more time to his farm. O’Sullivan was based in the firm’s Toronto office, where he centred his practice on commercial litigation, with a focus on business-related litigation.

“We are immeasurably grateful to Terry - the consummate litigator, partner and friend, model of professionalism, excellence, collegiality and fun,” said the firm in a news release.

Minden Gross LLP

Queenie Lo joins the Toronto-based firm as partner in its business law group. Lo’s practice includes private mergers and acquisitions and domestic and cross-border business issues.

The firm has also congratulated partner Steven Pearlstein on becoming an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, where he will teach Real Estate Transactions. Pearlstein’s practice centres on commercial real estate, banking and insolvency law.

WeirFoulds LLP

WeirFoulds has announced that it has three new partners, all based in its Toronto office.

Peter Jacobsen is a litigator whose practice areas include media law, defamation law, administrative law and constitutional law. Carlos Martins is a litigator focusing on aviation and defamation law. Andrew MacDonald’s practice spans the areas of media and defamation law, aviation law, administrative law, professional liability and employment disputes.
