It is within this context that the University seeks an objective and respected leader for the position of University Ombudsperson. Accountable to the President, the University Ombudsperson is an independent, impartial, and confidential resource for students, staff, and faculty to receive guidance and advice about their university-related concerns, and complaints regarding university policies, procedures, and decision-making structures. With a deep commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in all of its forms, the Ombudsperson may conduct inquiries into policies, rules, or procedures that appear unclear, inequitable, or unfair; and assist members of the university community to explore options and determine an appropriate course of action to resolve disputes successfully. The ideal candidate holds a university degree in law or a related discipline, combined with progressive
leadership experience in a university environment or a large, highly complex institution or commercial
organization. Experience and knowledge of labour relations, grievance procedures, and employment-related legislation is an asset, as is an understanding of university structure, governance, and policies. The successful candidate will be adept at dispute resolution, mediation, and negotiation, and will exercise sound judgement and the highest levels of ethics, integrity, and compassion. They will possess outstanding interpersonal, listening, and communication skills, and the ability to build respectful and collaborative relationships with the university community.
