Canadian Lawyer celebrates wins in industry awards

As the leading publication in the country for legal news and analysis, we prefer finding the story, not being it. But there are times when exceptions can be made. Like when we have good news to share. Canadian Lawyer is pleased to announce it has recently been reorganized with a number of industry awards.

Most recently, managing editor Tim Wilbur was awarded a Gold Tabbie award in the Editor’s Column category for his series of Editor’s Desk columns appearing in Canadian Lawyer magazine. Over the course of the year, Wilbur has written insightfully about virtual versus in-person court proceedings, the data revolution and the importance of ESG and workplace flexibility.  In addition, senior editor Zena Olijnyk’s article on the “right to disconnect,” was awarded Honourable Mention in the Feature Article: Top 25 Issues category.

The 2023 Tabbie Awards, the 20th in the competition’s history, featured nominations from across the globe, with submissions coming from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the UK, and the US. The awards are open to English-language b2b publications in 40 countries and encompass 20 editorial and design categories. These awards are organized by the Trade, Association, and Business Publications International, or TABPI, a global organization whose mission is “fostering b2b journalism, from local to global.”

“I think it clearly demonstrates the world-class reporting and writing that’s found in Canadian Lawyer, not to mention Key Media’s other legal publications,” says Key Media’s CEO Mike Shipley “To be recognized on an international stage is incredibly rewarding, and represents the work of a lot of people, including Tim and Zena.”

Canadian Lawyer was also an APEX Award Winner in 2023 in the writing category for “From Big Law to Launching a Firm,” also written by Wilbur, which appeared in the March 2022 issue of Canadian Lawyer in print and online. Tim followed that win by also earning an Award of Excellence for Writing - Interviews & Personal Profiles for the profile “From legal advocate to award-winning author,” which appeared in Canadian Lawyer, print and online.

The APEX Awards selected 100 Grand Award Winners out of its 1,100+ entries in 2023. The awards are organized by Communications Concepts, Inc., which advises publishing, PR and marketing professionals on best practices to improve their publications and communications programs.

“Obviously, winning awards isn’t why we do this work. We are passionate about the subjects we cover and have a commitment to providing the most insightful and accurate coverage of the Canadian legal profession. Our readers are some of the sharpest minds in the country. We believe our work should be equally sharp,” says Wilbur. “Awards tell us that we’re moving in the right direction.”

Congratulations to all the winners.
