Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: May 6, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Alexander Holburn

Partner Lorne Kotler has joined Alexander Holburn’s Vancouver office.  He is a seasoned litigator who has represented a diverse clientele. Kotler is the newest member of the firm’s business disputes practice group.

Dentons Canada

Dentons Canada has welcomed Raphael Tachie as a partner in the firm’s national tax and trusts, estates and wealth preservation groups. Tachie has over 12 years of experience as a trusts and estates lawyer. He served as president and is presently a board member of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.

Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP

The firm has welcomed Julie Lane as a partner in its Ottawa office. Lane is a former Chief Legal Officer (CLO) of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). Over the course of her nearly 20-year career at the LCBO – culminating in her promotion to CLO and Senior Vice President in 2018 – Lane played a central role in all legal and regulatory matters involving this Crown corporation. These include the historic liberalizing of Ontario’s alcohol market and the development of a provincial regulatory framework in connection with Canada’s legalization of recreational cannabis.

“As a past legal leader of one of the world’s largest purchasers of alcohol products, Julie’s not only been on the front lines of a shifting regulatory landscape; she’s been instrumental in shaping it,” said Cyndy Elderkin, managing partner of Gowling WLG's Ottawa office.

Meritas

Meritas has welcomed Torkin Manes LLP to its global membership as the network’s exclusive member in Toronto. Founded in 1974, Torkin Manes LLP is a full-service law firm based in downtown Toronto.

Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP

The firm has welcomed Kaleigh Du Vernet as counsel in its construction and infrastructure practice group. She has represented clients in construction litigation, arbitration, mediation, adjudication, and construction contract negotiation.
