Roundup of law firm hires, promotions and departures: Week of Apr. 17

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions and departures.

Baker McKenzie LLP

Given the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm announced in a media statement that it intends to reduce compensation in its offices across North America. In Canada, the firm’s attorneys will experience a 10 per cent decrease in base compensation.

While it recognizes that it cannot be sure about how long such decreases shall be necessary, at present, the firm expects that the reductions shall apply until the end of this year.

“We all will share in some short-term pain, but in the long term, taking these actions now is the most prudent way for us to move through this crisis as a Firm, with the smallest impact possible on our people and our clients,” said Colin Murray, the firm’s North America chief executive officer.
